Improved lead

[edit]

I had captured my own copy of the lead of this article in June of 2017 (which I filter and reformat for my narrower purpose). On comparing the old lead to the current lead just now, it's much improved. Kudos to those who contributed over the past three years. — MaxEnt 23:04, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Motto

[edit]

I don't think the motto is right because all of the Virginia Colonial arms I've seen read "En dat Virginia Qvintam" which means Virginia gives the fifth which makes more sense because Virginia is the fifth realm not the fourth 99.197.192.186 (talk) 18:45, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The fifth realm ie the Virginia Colony, granted charter as a company ie Virginia Company by the English King James, transitioned to the monarchy of Great Britain in 1707 via the Acts of Union in the uniting of the England and Scotland. The monarchy then became the British Monarchy. Thus, all references to the Virginia Colony, and all banners/emblems thereof are ENGLISH until 1707 and thereafter, Great Britain. The Acts of Union took effect on May 1st, 1707: Kingdom of Great Britain under a single government and monarch. Reference of the Virginia Company are all under the Kingdom of England, King James I, from charter to dissolution of the charter on May 24, 1624, and led to existing permanent English Settlements and English Crown claimed lands to become a "royal colony". Sources on Coat of Arms

[edit]

The coat of arms listed for this page says its the arms after 1714, but is there any actual evidence it changed to this form? The image itself doesn't list any reference used. I seems to be based off of the British Monarch's coat of arms after 1714, but is there any evidence that the Virginia arms changed to reflect it, or is just speculation? I could not find any examples of the colonial arms after 1714, so its hard to verify it myself. Thanks Woakey (talk) 22:13, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Heraldic matters: The College of Arms, established in 1484, creates and regulates coats of arms in the English and British realm. The college is responsible for granting and recording coats of arms. The Virginia Company (issued as the First Charter in 1606 by the ENGLISH Crown) used a seal with a shield featuring the English royal arms. The Colony of Virginia seal, adopted in 1660, featured a shield with the English royal arms, which were updated to the BRITISH royal arms in 1707, after the Acts of Union formed the Kingdom of Great Britain (Scotland and England under one monarchy). Note: The Virginia Company "corporate" control ended in 1624, revoked by King Charles I, the son of King James I. In 1624 the area of the VIRGINIA COMPANY became a "royal colony", absent any further corporate control of the Virginia Company. It was not until 1660, under King Charles II, that the royal Colony of Virginia was granted the royal Seal of the Virginia Colony of the English monarchy. Should the British Red Ensign be in the Infobox?

[edit]

The Red Ensign used to be the flag in the infobox for this article, but was removed by @Remsense due to being a civil ensign and not directly tied to the colony itself which is reasonable. Most other infoboxes for British colonies (at least in North America) have the Red Ensign listed as the flag even though the same also applies to them. While the flag isn't specific to any colony, it is representative of the British Empire as a whole, so I'm not sure whether it should be in colony articles or not. Personally, if it should be in the articles it should be labeled "Red Ensign" or something similar than just flag to avoiding being misleading, and if it shouldn't be in the articles it should be consistently applied across all colony articles.

I'm still getting used to editing, so let me know if this was the wrong place to ask. Thanks Woakey (talk) 21:20, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Correction: The Colony of Virginia began as an English crown chartered trade company...

[edit]

The Virginia Colony or Colony of Virginia, originated as the first successfully sustained English permanent settlement in 1606. First, in 1606, the Virginia Company, a corporate crown chartered trade company, sought to establish a permanent English Settlement. By 1624, the charter was dissolved, by King James I, thereby officially named a Royal Colony. It was not until Charles I that the English royal Virginia Colony was provided its own official royal seal. Note: The Great Britain was not formed until the Acts of Union, wherein and only after this time, was the Virginia Colony then a "British" Colony.
